Learn How Concrete Countertops Are Made

Building strong concrete countertops is something that can be done easily by anyone provided the materials required are available.  However, getting advice from a professional on how to go about the whole process is encouraged. When you want to come up with a strong and stable structure, there are some things you need to keep in mind.

Countertop Design Options

Concrete has many uses in the home. Since it is highly flexible, it can be incorporated with different useful functional features.  Concrete can be integrated with sinks, butcher blocks or drain boards. To ensure you have a strong countertops structure, it is essential to know how to make it correctly.

How to Make Concrete Countertops

Start out by getting the appropriate tools for building your custom countertop.

When building a concrete countertop you will need a concrete mixer, casting table, concrete countertop mix, countertop molds, glue can, wood veneer sheet, caulk and wire are some of the basic things you will need.  In addition, have plastic zip ties, past wax, medium density fiber board and a number of people who will help you with making the countertops.

Next, design a wood veneer whose dimensions measure to what you need. Currently, the standard measurement used for countertops is approximately 0.5 to 0.75 inches. However, you can exceed this measurements based on the kind of structure you want to build.

After finishing with the wood veneer, check the template and note down the control joints. Do not allow the control joint distance to exceed 4 feet if the concrete counter is 10 feet long. If you want longer countertops, then you will have to use more control joints. This is in line with the general rule that building a concrete countertop , you must not distribute the control joints more than 2 to 3 times the slab thickness, which is normally measured in inches.

When coming up with the frame, screw together the 1 times 3s measurements. This should be done using the fiber board when designing the frame’s lower part. Once this is done, connect the frame with the deck screws and make sure they are tightly fixed. Afterwards, apply caulk on the corners and the inner edges of the structure.

Afterwards, apply paste wax inside the frame to strengthen and soften the surface. Come up with a rebar grid that has 4 inch intersections at the edges. This should be fastened with strong plastic zip ties to ensure they are strong and stable. Once this is done, hang the grid by using a 1 times 3s.  You can use a wire to hang since the grid prepared is not heavy and can easily balance halfway up the frame.

After hanging the grid, embark on preparing and mixing the concrete. The concrete amount required will be determined with the dimensions of the countertop you currently have. There are special concrete mixes for countertops that are recommended by professionals. Using the recommended amount will help to avoid the creation of air holes, which can weaken the whole structure.

The next step is to leave the concrete countertop to dry.  You will need help to carry the concrete since it will be heavy. In addition, you will have to be careful when moving and fixing the pieces so as not to cause any cracks or weaken the whole structure that you have taken time to design.

When working on this project, it is essential to be patient.  You should pay attention to all the details to avoid making simple mistakes. It is also important to wear protective clothing such as safety glasses and gloves.
